TOM UNDERHILL

Thomas Paul Underhill, known to his many friends as Tommy or TBone, was born in Lodi on August 22, 1985. He died on January 7, 2023 after a lengthy illness. Tom lived most of his life in Lodi, except for a couple of years in Denver where he worked for Comcast.

The most important thing in Tommy’s life was his relationships with family and friends. A larger-than-life figure, he was a people-magnet, especially for those who don’t quite fit in. Tommy knew the names and stories of many of the homeless people he encountered in his daily life. From childhood onward, he was the one who would befriend the bullied kid or the outsider.

Tom loved his Mom dearly. On her birthday or Mother’s Day, she could depend on receiving flowers and a card or note from Tom (Although sometimes the flowers looked suspiciously hand-picked from an unknown source).

Tom grew up in a loving, close family. However, he had other loving and close families of friends. Many can tell of a time when Tom helped them through a difficult patch of life. Tom had no use for superficial, shallow relationships. He was the real deal. He could spot hypocrisy a mile away. He loved his friends deeply.

Tommy is survived by his parents, Larry and Julie Underhill, his sisters, Heather (Joel) Swenddal of Champaign Illinois and Angie (Guinness) Wieland of Sacramento, his niece Freddie and his nephew Gilligan. Tom is also survived by numerous aunts and uncles and cousins and more friends than can be counted. Lastly, Tommy is survived by his beloved dog Artie, who has now been adopted by Tom’s folks.

John Maxwell says that the definition of true success in life is when you are loved and respected the most by the people who know you the best. This describes Tom Underhill.

Tom’s life will be celebrated Saturday, January 28, 2023 at Lodi Woman’s Club, 325 West Pine Street in Lodi at 11 am. If you come, come hungry.
